ITIN Renewal in Pakistan — Renew Before It Costs You a Refund

An ITIN that hasn't been used on a US federal tax return for three consecutive years expires automatically. Filing with an expired ITIN still goes through — but refunds are delayed and certain credits are disallowed until the renewal completes. We renew it properly, with your passport certified here in Lahore.

Why ITINs Expire

Three Quiet Years Is All It Takes

An ITIN is not issued for life. Under current IRS rules, an ITIN that is not used on a US federal tax return for three consecutive tax years expires automatically at the end of that third year — no application error required, no warning beyond a mailed CP48 notice that often never reaches an address in Pakistan.

Expiry rarely announces itself. Most people discover it the hard way: a refund that never arrives, a credit disallowed on a notice, or a bank asking why the number no longer validates. The renewal itself is a Form W-7 marked for renewal, held to the same document standards as a new application — which is where our in-house passport certification saves you from mailing originals to Texas.

Renewing before you file is the whole game. The IRS will accept a return with an expired ITIN, but it processes it in a degraded state — refunds held, ITIN-dependent credits removed — until the renewal completes. Filing season is exactly the wrong time to start a seven-week renewal.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my ITIN has expired?

The main trigger today is non-use: if your ITIN did not appear on a US federal tax return for three consecutive tax years, it expired at the end of the third year. The IRS also mails CP48 notices to holders whose ITINs are due to expire. If you are unsure, send us the number and we will assess it as part of a free consultation.

Do I need to attach a tax return to renew?

No — a renewal application can be submitted on its own, without an attached return. That said, most clients renew because a filing is coming up, so we usually coordinate the renewal and the return together so the timing works in your favour.

What happens if I file my US return with an expired ITIN?

The IRS will process the return, but it will treat the ITIN as expired: refunds are held up and credits tied to a valid ITIN can be disallowed until you renew. Renewing before you file avoids the notices, the recalculations and the wait.

Can my spouse and children renew at the same time?

Yes. Where family members' ITINs are expiring, the renewals can be prepared and submitted together, and as a CAA we can certify passports for the family at one appointment instead of mailing anyone's originals abroad.

Does renewing change my ITIN number?

No — renewal keeps the same nine-digit number. The IRS simply reactivates it and confirms in writing once processing completes.

Check Your ITIN Status in One Message

Send us your ITIN details on WhatsApp and we will tell you whether it is expired, whether renewal makes sense for your situation, and the fixed fee to handle it end to end.
